MBT’s first Hawaiian Party was held on Saturday, May 16. The menu spotlight was the whole roasted pig, but the Kalua pork, macaroni salad, coleslaw and shoyu hot dogs made by Dan Peterson were also big hits.

Additional food included Huli Huli tofu, vegetable curry, rice, taro chips and even small containers of poi. May Nakano’s SPAM® musubi were so tasty that they ran out, and she skillfully assembled more almost to the end of the evening. Talk about dedication!

Desserts included Hawaiian cheesecake bars, Haupia cupcakes, macadamia nut cookies, Rice Krispie treats, mango and pineapple. And there was a wide variety of drinks to accommodate everyone’s tastes. Of course, Albert made genuine Hawaiian shave ice, which everyone—young and old—enjoyed all evening.

The entertainment for the evening was provided by Pesi Mauga, who was accompanied by his wife and very talented nieces. The young women performed traditional dancing from various Polynesian islands, awing everyone with their graceful moves. Then, Pesi asked for female volunteers, and several girls and women donned grass skirts and went on stage to try hula dancing. After the women and girls’ turn, Pesi called up the males and several men and boys volunteered. After putting on grass skirts, the men and boys were shown the steps for hula dancing and entertained everyone.

After the show, Alexa Tang showed some of the children how to make very cute SPAM® musubi using terry cloth towels, felt and googly eyes. There were also several games for them to play.

It was a great party and, of course, so many people helped set up, cook, collect tickets at the entrance, serve drinks and clean up. This great event would not have happened if it were not for each and every person who worked so hard to pull it off.

Thank you to everyone who helped out and attended. We are already discussing next year’s Hawaiian party.
